Magic Tea Party, Sweet Bear JSK – Review

I ordered the dress from Glitzy Wonderland and it was a perfect transaction like last time so I’m just going to do a review of the dress. If you are interested in my review of Glitzy Wonderland you can read that post here.

The Taobao lolita brand Magic Tea Party tend to get quite mixed reviews and unfortunately mine is no different.

The dress I ordered is called ‘Sweet Bear JSK’ by Magic Tea Party. When I saw the stock photos online I thought it looked really pretty and I liked the fact that it’s a sweet print but not super young and cutesy. It also features teddy bears and who doesn’t love bears! I opted for it in the green rather than pink as I just preferred the colour.

The JSK comes with a patterned detachable bow, small green pin on bows and waist-ties. I don’t like the look of the patterned bow pinned on the dress, it’s just so busy and it doesn’t really add anything so I may use it as a head bow instead. The small bows are made from pale green ribbon which don’t quite match the green of the dress and also they are really uneven.

The first thing I noticed when I laid the dress out flat is just how wide and shapeless the bust part is. There’s not really any shaping to it at all other than that it gets slightly narrower towards the waist and curves down a bit for under the arms. Also the dress has no shirring on the back, it just has some ribbon corset lacing at the top and fastens with a hidden side zip.

I’m pretty sure the dress is made from lightweight cotton, but there are no labels with material or care instructions anywhere so I can’t confirm that. The fabric is quite thin so would be better for summer, it is fully lined inside though with what I think is also thin cotton. It creases quite badly, as is clear from the photos, but hopefully these will iron out easily. I really like the colour of the dress and the print is crisp though I’m not keep on the airbrush type style or the broken slightly uneven outlines. To be fair though from a distance you don’t really see this but when studied close up it does look a bit untidy.

I like the wavy scalloped edge around the bottom and top of the dress, it’s very neatly done and just adds a pretty extra detail. The ribbon corset lacing goes through actual fabric loops that are sewn into the dress, they seem pretty sturdy which should mean you can lace it quite tightly. The lace heart trim is slightly off-white whereas the large polka dots are pure white but personally I think this is better as it makes it softer. Pure white would probably have been a bit too strong of a contrast. There are quite a few loose threads here and there which look untidy, also the pleats at the bottom aren’t equal and the frills on the straps don’t match up properly. One has been sewn on slightly higher up than the other on the front, the back matches more closely though. I also dislike the buttons used for the waist-ties, personally I think they look cheap and tacky but that might just be my opinion.

The dress is currently on offer at $79 USD on Glitzy which is approx £51 (and it’s free shipping). I’m not sure I would say it’s worth £51, it’s ok but it’s not much better than Bodyline quality and you can get nice dresses from there at around £35. I do think the print and overall design is nicer than Bodyline’s though. I checked the price of the dress in their actual Taobao store and its approx £34 which is exactly the sort of price I think it’s worth. If you ordered it from there you would still have fees for a shopping service and shipping though plus may get customs charges too so always bare that in mind when ordering. Personally I still quite like the dress and it doesn’t look as shapeless when it’s worn (I will try and add worn pics soon to show the fit and will update this post).

Pendulous Threads, Metal Custom Crown – Review

Hello wonderful blog readers,
Today I want to introduce you to a company that I recently came across and bought some items from.

The lady handcrafts various items including jewellery, accessories and elaborate headwear at really good prices. I’d say the items are generally gothic, horror and fantasy themed, rather than being pretty and cute, but her pieces vary depending on where her creativity takes her. I was first drawn to her work when I came across her beautiful medieval inspired cross crowns on etsy.
Like lots of places she ran various discounts and promotions for January, one of which was on custom crowns, so I couldn’t resist any longer and placed an order. I liked the bird skull crowns but they all tended to be on a floral base and I wanted something more gothic and pointy which is why I opted for a custom crown. However whilst trying to decide what to opt for I spotted pretty filigree bats on one of her other crown designs and I love bats, so the bat crown was created.

Other than saying I wanted bats I left all the designing down to her and this is what she produced:

Isn’t it amazing? Also when she first shared the design on her facebook page it went crazy. It’s bats and looks awesome so that’s not really a surprise. She had other people asking about them and so asked if I was ok with her offering it as a design, obviously the point of custom designs is to get something different, but I was totally fine with it as I just wanted a fancy crown. Plus all I did pretty much was say bats, it was all her design and creation, plus I want to help out and support small companies, crafters and artists and seeing how excited and inspired people were is a nice feeling.

So, back to my crown. I purchased a custom crown via etsy on the 25th December 2014. It was at a promotional price of £20 plus £3.20 postage. She had stated that she wouldn’t be making them until the start of the new year which was fine. She messaged me on the 27th Dec to get an idea of what I wanted and after a couple of messages back and forth I received the first images on the 3rd Jan 2015.

After confirming I was happy with the design she said she would get it posted the following day and she also asked about offering it as a design for others to purchase. The crown was posted on the 5th Jan, like she stated, and it arrived on the 6th Jan.

It arrived in a small box which I was slightly scared to open at first as Royal Mail can be so rough with items that I worried it may be damaged but inside it was packed carefully with paper so I don’t think it moved around much at all.
Sorry the images are so dark – it was a really dull day.

The crown seems to be constructed from lots of overlapping fancy filigree metal pieces that I think are possibly glue gunned together and then the bats are at the top. It looks like the pieces have all been gently bent to create the rounded crown shape. It’s all then over painted and two combs have been added at the back so it will sit securely on your head. The crown has a bit of give so you can sit it higher or lower on your head. How strong it is and how well it will wear over time I guess depends on how carefully it’s looked after. It seems well constructed though and is nicely finished, it’s clear she has taken a lot of time on it. There are a couple of tiny areas where the paint is missing or has come off but you barely notice it and the back is neatly done and painted too. Personally I’m very happy with my crown, so much so that I went and purchased a bird skull crown about a week or so later as it was on sale.

I’m going to share some photos of my other crown too so you can see what it’s like. This one was ready made so was posted out straight away. The only thing that bothers me about this crown is the ribbon it ties on with. They don’t really work and the tighter you try and pull them the more the knot at the top comes undone. I think I might add combs or at least sew the end of the ribbon around the crown to ensure it doesn’t come undone. Again there are a few tiny bits of paint missing but I can easily touch it up.

Outfit Shot – Super Casual

Super casual outfit that I wore to the theater – I went to see Matthew Bourne’s ‘Edward Scissorhands’ dance production with my friend. It was a really good show, the costumes and sets were wonderful. It was a super cold day so I chose my outfit based on layering up to stay warm. (Sorry for bad photos).

A Quick Catch-up

Ah, where does the time go! How can it be nearly a week in to February already? As you know, I didn’t make any new year’s resolutions as such but I did use the new year as a good excuse to do a big clear out, re-think a few things and do a spot of reorganising. As a result I didn’t post much as my days were spent working, cleaning/tidying and listing a ton of things on ebay. I wish I had finished all the sorting but sadly it always seems to be a never-ending task. The good news though is I’m organising my wardrobe (in terms of what I wear/style) which means buying new things and therefore having things to review and post about! I had hoped to do a review post today but it has been so dull and overcast all day that the photos just wouldn’t come out well enough. Look out for a review post very soon though – it has a gothic bat theme.
